Trying to get a message out to people who SHOULD care has proven to be a life’s work of going from watering hole to watering hole in hopes of finding someone who cares. For all the adulation of the Web’s HyperLinking capabilities, it is used sparingly and the so-called Search Engines are commercial engagement optimization engines that care not at all for helping find anything that isn’t making someone money.
COBOL, at 60+, is blamed for the failures of a few applications. And the apprentices and the bosses blame the tool. The Masters that wrote billions of lines of COBOL that have worked perfectly for decades on end used the tool the apprentices have. Mostly earlier and less capable versions of the tool.
Blame the Social Security Administration’s or the Louisiana Office Of Motor Vehicles’s problem on other failures. The COBOL is a tool as capable of being used to fix the problems as any other … at less cost and risk.
